Exploring Urban Cultural Ecology: Yongkang & Qingtian Urban Landscape Walking Tour

Exploring Urban Cultural Ecology: Yongkang & Qingtian Urban Landscape Walking Tour
Program Introduction
This interdisciplinary general education walking tour begins with an on-site exploration of the urban landscapes of Yongkang Street and Qingtian Street.
Strolling through the surrounding neighborhoods, every historic house and narrow alley reveals layers of Taipei’s urban memory and daily life. This walking tour organized by the General Education Center—“Exploring Urban Cultural Ecology: Yongkang & Qingtian Urban Landscape”—invites students to transform the city into a cross-disciplinary learning classroom. Integrating perspectives from the Center’s seven major fields of study, participants will re-examine their everyday surroundings through:
- field observation,
- visual and cultural analysis,
- historical contextualization, and
- spatial storytelling.
Through immersive on-site learning, students connect classroom knowledge with real urban environments, cultivating deeper understanding of urban culture, ecological networks, and aesthetic experiences.
From the humanities and aesthetics, we explore architectural styles, everyday life, and collective memory.
From the social sciences, we interpret community formation, resident interactions, and public policy developments.
Natural and life sciences reveal how old trees, plants, and green spaces form the living ecological network of the city.
Mathematics and logic are observed in street proportions, circulation routes, and spatial order.
Finally, information technology enables historical comparisons through digital archives and interactive map navigation.
The General Education Center envisions this interdisciplinary urban exploration as only the beginning. With humanities, social sciences, science, art, and technology converging into a unified learning experience, participants are encouraged to expand their senses and perspectives beyond Yongkang and Qingtian—embarking on self-directed journeys across the city to uncover the cultural narratives embedded in Taipei’s diverse landscapes.
